Leon Brouwer

My Bio

leon4Well, my wife ordered me to write a short piece, telling people who I am. Hmm, that’s a hard one, I don’t even know myself. I guess I’m still discovering things I didn’t know about myself. One thing I know for sure (from an early age on), I love singing.

I had my first band when I was 16. A friend of mine asked me to join the band he was playing in, after the singer left. They had a gig that same evening! I suppose my friend was desperate or getting sick and tired of hearing me singing along during concerts (standing close to me) and thought he’d be better of when I would waste my energy in a band of my own. Anyway, I did it and still doing it! Many, many bands followed, I won’t mention all the bands I’ve been in, because there are a lot of them, but none of them made a difference to be honest. I’ve had a lot of fun playing in them, but never met the right people at the right time though. By ‘the right people’ I mean people who were serious enough to go all the way. I’ve met a lot of talented musicians, but either they thought they were the next best thing God made (after he created Steve Vai) or they had other interests that were more important (playing darts on a Monday evening instead of a record deal by Roadrunner (!?)) Many frustrating experiences in the past made me almost quit music definitely.
Then, when you least expect it, something happens. I had already stopped making music for over four years, until another friend of mine asked me to join his band. The drummer of this band was Martin. We hit it on from the start, sensing there was a kind of chemistry between us. So Martin asked me to join The Barstool Philosophers, a band he started himself and was kind of his baby. So I went on a Friday evening to the Harrow Studio (where the band was rehearsing), sung a few lines and I guess that’s where it started. The music we’re making with this band made it suddenly all worthwhile! It’s a mixture of music styles that I played before (sympho, metal, classic etc.) and that I love, played with a refreshing energy. I must admit that it didn’t quite strike me until we started recording our first tracks though (mainly because our rehearsals at that time were so loud we couldn’t hear ourselves!) From that moment on something happened: a little bit of magic hit me hard, this was my music! So, here I am, home at last, finally making the music I love: passionate, hard and soft, soft and hard, with no boundaries. As long as we have fun (and we do!) we will continue and I hope we’ll make a lot of records to share our music with the rest of the world.

That’s it for now on my behalf, but we’ll keep you posted through our website of all the things happening to us. So all the best to all you out there, especially to the people who enjoy our music the way we do of course…..
